Boom Bap reigns supreme
Meet our clients who trusted Mind The Wax to press their music on vinyl!
Mic Bles & Brenx rise from below the surface delivering a potent dose of that hard hitting Boombap on their new collaboration project “Underground Overlords“
Brenx lays down the score for this 8 track grimy boombap audio banger as Bles delivers some of his coldest bars to date. The project features Oxnard heavy weights Kamoflawge (of Locura Terminal) as well as Inzom on the project both spitting bars in Spanish, firing off impeccable verses along with cuts from scratch master DJ TMB (Snowgoons DJs), Brenx and DJ Romes holding it down on the turntables.
“Underground Overlords” is a bar-heavy lyrical onslaught with raw and vivid imagery accented with Latin elements. Mic Bles and Brenx deliver the unrelenting Boombappery once again with Underground Overlords.
What was the inspiration behind your album and what the album is about?
MIC BLES: This is myself and Brenx second EP collaboration together. This time around we didn’t want to do a sequel to the previous EP we wanted to start fresh. Brenx is one of the hardest boom bap producers out, so when he was sending over the beats it inspired me to bring back an old moniker I used to use ” Underground Overlords” ,I always felt it was a fitting name for my representation within underground Hip-Hop but I never felt it got its proper due. No better time to bring back the Underground Overlords name back then with a hard hitting EP collab with Brenx. Its raw bars, lyrics with a gritty street hop essence on bangin Brenx productions.
BRENX: To me the album had to have a Latin vibe, possibly because I was watching a TV show in Spanish 😄
I’ve always had a love for Latin samples and in my opinion those beats are my best. I started collecting lots of samples from the 60’s originated from several Latin countries. To finish the vibe, I’ve added loads of move quotes depending on the track’s concept.
“As the Underground Overlords EP finds its home on wax, listeners are invited to immerse themselves in the raw, unapologetic world that Mic Bles and Brenx have crafted — a world where Boom Bap reigns supreme and the art of raw storytelling takes center stage.”
Split Fire Hip-Hop
Any collaborations that took part and you would like to highlight?
MIC BLES: We brought in DJ TMB to do 3 tracks with us and DJ Romes on another to deliver their trademark sharp cuts, sample and scratch hooks that really brought those tracks to another level sonically. Another huge factor was the 2 feature verses on the EP coming from Kamoflawge (Locura Terminal) and Inzom. Both MC’s (hailing from my hometown of Oxnard, CA) fired off sick verses in Spanish over Brenx latin inspired samples/beats that brought a new flavor to the EP and gave it a wider appeal and audience overall.
Which tools and equipment used in the production process of this album?
BRENX: During this production process I’ve primarily used FL studio and the occasional use of an MPC500 for drum patterns.
As stated above I’ve used mostly Latin samples from the 1960’s. I think there might be one or two different origin samples on the project.
Me personally, really like Peligro and Oracle. I’ve worked hard on those productions and used my best production techniques.
MIC BLES: When you hear SIDE B which is the instrumentals, I gotta say Brenx really killed it and added the right samples, sound effects and layers within the production that bring the beats to life and make this project a well rounded and cohesive EP in 8 tracks.
This album is a Latin style gem and is a must hear for everyone that enjoys lots of detail.
Why did you decide to press the vinyl on marble color and how is the experience of listening to your music on vinyl?
MIC BLES: Brenx designed the cover art for the project, keeping it dark with the all black cover and skulls to really set the mood of the record.
We chose the clear base with black marble on the record that once pressed looks like smoke and really added to the aesthetic and overall theme of this project.
Originally when the EP came out we had it set for a digital only release, but once the project was out, along with its 4 music videos it really started to get legs and become a classic in our catalogues so we decided it had to be on wax!
BRENX: It came out great! My first ever own vinyl and I’m proud. The marble colored style makes the vinyl really aesthetically pleasing to look at. Paired with the warm sound it has, it turned out to be a really good project!
The “Underground Overlords” EP was pressed on 140gr vinyl with clear base color and black marble effect, on limited 200 copies and it includes 8 full tracks on Side A and their instrumentals on Side B.
